Invasive plants are an ongoing issue for homeowners, landowners, and the environment in general. It takes a community effort in order to contain these destructive species, and information pertaining to control methods will be available at the start of the new year.
Hosted by Northwest Illinois Forestry Association (NIFA), University of Illinois Extension of Jo Daviess County and Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Controlling Non-Woody Invasives Workshop will be held on Wednesday, January 21st from 6:30 – 8:30pm at the Elizabeth Community Building.
TOPICS
Non-woody invasives such as garlic mustard, teasel and various vine and thistle species (and more) will be the focus of this informative workshop. Representatives from the above organizations will cover the following topics:
- Identification of non-woody exotic invasive plant species
- Successful treatment options for those species
- What new invasive threats are being seen statewide, especially approaching NW Illinois
- Resources available to land owners
FEATURED SPEAKER
The keynote speaker for the evening will be Chris Evans of IDNR. Chris is the Invasive Species Campaign Coordinator for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Based in Springfield, his mission is to coordinate statewide efforts to combat exotic invasive species and to disseminate information about these species. Before taking this position, he was the Executive Director of the River-to-River Cooperative Weed Management Area, and 11-county collaboration of government agencies, non-profits, and landowners fighting invasive species.
Other presenters will include specialists from U of I Extension and members of NIFA.

LOCATION
The Elizabeth Community Building is located on the western end of Elizabeth, Illinois, on US Route 20. Look for the Highland Community College West sign on the north side of the road, and drive into their parking lot. The Community Building is at the west end of that complex of buildings.
