NIFA ANNUAL DINNER MEETING

On Tuesday, March 24th, at our annual dinner meeting, we will welcome the Illinois State Climatologist, Dr. Jim Angel, to discuss "Climate is the Forest, Weather is the Tree" - important climate and weather features of Illinois, how they are changing, and what that means for woodland owners and foresters.  This meeting, a collaboration with the University of Illinois Extension Service, will be held at the Naaman Diehl Auditorium adjacent to, and behind, the Farm Bureau building in Mount Carroll starting at 7 pm.  Many thanks to Extension Educator Jay Solomon for arranging this visit by Dr. Angel.

The evening will include

  • a video review of the past year’s events,
  • an IDNR update on new potential invasive plant threats, and
  • a free NIFA sign for every paid member (see below)

FEATURED SPEAKER
Dr. Jim Angel has been the Illinois State Climatologist since 1997, after receiving his doctorate in Climatology from the University of Illinois. He has a broad interest in all things related to weather and climate, including droughts, floods, winter storms, heat waves, tornadoes, and long-term climate change (past, present, and future). He has worked on a number of research projects looking at drought, extreme rainfall events, Great Lakes storms, 19th and 20th century climate change, potential future climate change, as well as the impacts of weather and climate extremes.

The State Climatologist promotes the use of climate information in areas crucial to the economic and environmental benefit of Illinois by disseminating climate information, monitoring climate events, conducting applied research, and making presentations to community organizations, individuals, and the media.  Additionally, the State Climatologist conveys information to the public on the impacts of climate change and variability on climate-sensitive systems such as agriculture and water resources, and on the characteristics and impacts of severe events (heavy rainstorms, tornadoes, ice storms, and snowstorms).
