Unfortunately, the prescribed burn has been cancelled due to poor burn conditions and the forecasted weather.  Thank you for your interest.

To repeat, there will be NO burn on Saturday, December 12th.

If everything works out, this will be a chance to observe an actual prescribed forest burn and discuss the planning, preparation, and variables that enter into having a successful burn.  This observation of a prescribed burn will offer these opportunities

  • to see and learn the methodology behind installing adequate fire breaks,
  • to learn about and see necessary fire equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to conduct an Rx fire,
  • to learn about favorable and unfavorable weather conditions for burning,
  • to learn how to use the prevailing winds as your ally in executing a safe and controlled burn,
  • to learn how to use topography to execute a safe and controlled burn,
  • to see a prescribed burn in action and
  • to observe the fire effects immediately afterward.

IDNR District Forester Jeff Harris will be available to describe aspects of the burn in progress and explain the preparation that preceded it, and answer any questions.

Because prescribed burns are very dependent upon appropriate weather conditions, there can be no guarantee that the stated date and time will be accurate.  Therefore, we ask that you register for this event.  That will allow us to notify you of any last minute decisions to change the date or time.

Please note the change in time - from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm.  This time of year we will have to wait until mid-day or later in order to get fire to take off, give the earth a chance to warm up.  We will assemble at 11:00 am in the Dufford's driveway.  Then, Jeff Harris will walk those physically able around the fire break and discuss what was done to prepare for the prescribed burn.  About noon, an attempt will be made to get the fire started.

Jeff suggests bringing a chair, water, snacks, and hiking apparel. The slope is steep walking up to the top of the ridge, with the fire break following the ridge top. While the fire is in progress we will be observing from a safe distance.

Please check back to this page on the evening of Friday, December 11th.  Some time after 6 pm, we will post whether the condition will be favorable for the Saturday burn.
